Viyyukka - The Morning Star: Voices of India's Women Revolutionaries

"Viyyukka" (Morning Star) is a 2023 anthology of stories written in Telugu by women revolutionaries within India's Maoist movement, published by the Revolutionary Writers Association. These narratives, written over four decades from within the guerrilla struggle, are not conventional fiction but documented lived experiences. They offer a rare glimpse into the intertwined realities of armed revolution, gendered participation, and life among Adivasi (indigenous) communities, capturing themes of survival, love, loss, and resistance. The introduction situates these stories within the history of revolutionary movements in India, beginning with the 1967 Naxalbari uprising--a peasant revolt that became a seminal moment for the Maoist movement. This struggle, and subsequent ones in Srikakulam and the historic Telangana region, rejected the Indian state and parliamentary politics in favor of a protracted "People's War." The movement later consolidated into the CPI (Maoist) party and established a significant presence in the forest region of Dandakaranya. There, the revolutionaries converged with long-standing Adivasi resistance movements fighting for their rights to *jal*, *jangal*, *jameen* (water, forest, and land). The Party organized Adivasis against forest officials and land displacement, establishing alternative governance structures called Janatana Sarkars (people's governments). The movement also developed a clear perspective on combating patriarchy, forming large women's organizations like KAMS and encouraging women to join the guerrillas, where they now constitute 45% of the cadre. The Indian state has responded with intense repression, from the Salwa Judum militia and "Operation Green Hunt" to the ongoing "Operation Kagar," aiming to crush the Maoists and clear the mineral-rich land for corporate exploitation. The anthology frames this struggle as part of a global, existential resistance against capitalist and colonialist forces, arguing that the defense of Adivasi life and knowledge is crucial for ecological survival and a more just future.
